  1.  Read 'The Yellow Wallpaper'. There is a link to the story here:

TASK: Identify ten points in the story where we feel sympathy for the narrator. Then write 300 words from John’s point of view, examining his feelings about his wife.

2.  Find the extract from 'Notes on a small island' by Bill Bryson which starts: ‘My first sight of England was on a foggy March night in 1973’ to ‘wasn’t so much walking as being dragged along three legs’, The extract can be located in this copy of the text:

Identify aspects of Bryson’s writing which mimics a conversational tone and how this shapes our understanding of his viewpoint.

3.  Find a blog online – any blog that takes your interest – and print out two pages of it. Annotate the two pages paying attention to how the author has targeted a specific audience and the methods used to meet the text’s purpose.
